How do I get a Passport to Joy?

All current members and anyone who joins by the end of 2015 will receive a Passport. If you’re not a current member, you can join or reinstate here.

If I become a member now, can I get stickers for past events that I’ve attended?

Yes, you can work that out with the series/event organizers.

We have a Family membership. Do both of us get a Passport?

Yes!

Where is the list of Passport to Joy destinations?

You'll find the list here... locations are being added daily!

What kinds of events can be Passport destinations?

Any dance, music or song event related to CDSS’s one-hundred-year history.

Genres could include:

  • contra dances
  • English country dances
  • square dances
  • family and community dances
  • pub sings
  • song swaps
  • shape note singing
  • gatherings of organizers, callers, musicians, or educators involved in these participatory arts

Events could include:

  • ongoing series
  • one-day events
  • weekends
  • balls
  • ales
  • camps
  • concerts/shows
  • festivals
  • conferences
  • workshop

What does my group have to do to become a Passport destination?

Contact CDSS and say, “We want to be a Passport destination!” The best way to do this is to send an email message to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., with the word “Passport” in the subject line. For more details, keep reading.

Is this only for CDSS Group Affiliates?

No, but contact us if you are interested in becoming a CDSS Group Affiliate!

We don’t have a logo, per se. What should we do?

You can send us your info without a logo, and we’ll make text only stickers for you. Or, this could be your impetus to have one of your artistic members design one for you!

To receive your stickers, send us:

  • NAME, LOCATION, DATE, and URL (if any) of your series/event
  • event/series LOGO
  • NUMBER of stickers that we should send you (if more than 63)
  • appropriate mailing ADDRESS

Our group organizes multiple series and special events throughout the year. How many different stickers can we get?

You should provide one sticker design for each “series,” and one for each special event. We define a “series” as a regularly repeating dance, music or song event with a distinct organizational identity.

The idea is that Passport holders will get one and only one unique sticker for every event they attend, so you’ll need to provide a separate sticker design (or name) for each individual event.

For ideal efficiency on our end, we’d appreciate your sending all your requests at the same time, but if that’s not feasible we can accommodate you.

What about regular weekly/monthly series – do you get a sticker every time you go?

Nope, that’s cheating ;). One sticker per series.

How many stickers can we have, and how do we get them?

Stickers come 63 to a page. Unless you tell us otherwise, we will send one page of each design you provide.

For the logo: please send a digital image such as a pdf or a jpg. Note that it will be reduced to fit on a 1” sticker, so it should be sharp and of fairly high resolution.

Email this information to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., putting “Passport” in the subject line.

Stickers: color, or black & white?

Whatever you send us! :)

Can’t we just print the stickers ourselves?

If you mean, can we help save CDSS some money by printing the stickers ourselves, sure, that would be great! Please go ahead and send us the logo design anyway so we can have a record of it, and we’ll send you the file of stickers to print at your end – and thanks!

Passport to Joy FAQ

This is a terrific time to become a member of CDSS. In January 2015, we will be issuing a Passport to Joy to every member, as part of the yearlong Centennial celebration, which concludes in December 2015.

What Is the Passport to Joy?

It's a passport booklet that you take with you wherever you dance, sing or play music. Collect one Passport to Joy sticker for each Participating Series or Special Event you attend. At the end of 2015, you’ll have a record of all the amazing things you did, and a really cool keepsake of this once in a lifetime celebration.

Send in your passport for verification to qualify for awesome awards -- for lots of stickers, furthest traveled, creativity, etc – to be presented in Spring 2016.

Be a Passport Destination

Organizers! Holding a traditional dance, music or song event in 2015? Your beloved regular series? A morris ale, Playford Ball, contra dance weekend, pub sing, international rapper sword contest, May Day celebration, Sacred Harp convention, leadership conference or musicians’ workshop, family camp or community gathering? Send your 300 dpi color logo (or the name of your organization if you don’t have a logo) to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (put Passport to Joy in the subject line). We will include you in our List of Passport to Joy Destinations and send you a sheet of Passport to Joy stickers to distribute to participants! (You do not need to be a CDSS Affiliate to participate.)

Groups with events in January: the sooner we hear about your event, the better!

Get your Passport to Joy!

Anyone who is a current member or who joins in 2015 will receive a Passport to Joy, but if you join now, you’ll get yours right at the beginning of the year, and you can use it at January events!

The Regular Way—join as a new CDSS member at www.cdss.org/join.

Or join through the Special Centennial Membership Offer: we’re offering a complimentary NEW membership with your $100 gift in celebration of 100 years!

What IS the Spread the Joy Campaign?

We believe that participatory dance, music, and song spread joy and build community.

CDSS is seizing the opportunity presented by its Centennial in 2015 to launch major new programs, services, and initiatives; engage the North American dance, music, and song community in celebrating where we have been, where we are, and where we are going; and raise the resources necessary to build a sustainable future for CDSS, so that we can meet the needs of the community, advocate for these traditions, and steward them well for the next 100 years and beyond.

(See the CDSS Strategic Direction: 2014-2017 for more details)

How much does CDSS hope to raise through the Spread the Joy campaign?

We are planning to raise $1M in gifts and pledges over the next several years. You can help us reach that goal!

How much has already been raised?

As of August 27, 2015, we have received gifts and pledges totaling over $610,000

How will my donation make a difference? What impact can this have?

Your donation will provide crucial support for CDSS as it grows to fulfill the needs of communities, leaders, and organizers across North America. It will:

  • build stronger, more connected, resilient, and sustainable communities, through our regional conferences, community residencies, grants, scholarships, mentorships, leadership training, and nonprofit management support
  • help us complete the transformation of our website into a comprehensive, centralized source of information, education, and resources
  • underwrite the digitization of our library and archives so that photos, papers, and ephemera from historical through modern times can be made accessible to all
  • provide CDSS with the resources to be the effective advocates you need, working at the local, regional, and national level, to sustain the vitality of the traditions we love for the next 100 years.

Can I pledge now, and pay later?

Yes, you absolutely can. In fact, many donors to the campaign are choosing to make a 3-year pledge. Download a fillable PDF form that you can email back to us; or download a PDF form you can write out and snail mail to us.

Can I make a Centennial pledge in honor/in memory of an important person in my life?

Absolutely!!

Can I direct my Centennial gift towards a specific project or program?

An unrestricted gift is by far the best way to make an impact through Spread the Joy! Such gifts support the overall mission of the Centennial and CDSS’s strategic vision for the future, and are the foundational support of all Centennial projects and programs!

We do recognize that for some, making a gift specifically towards a project that is particularly meaningful to them is powerful and important. If you would like to discuss options for directing your Centennial gift, feel free to email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

What are the tax benefits for FY 2015?

You may only deduct the amount actually donated within any fiscal year. If you make a gift to CDSS in 2015, the full amount is deductible from your 2015 taxes.

How will I be recognized for my gift?

We will be recognizing Spread the Joy donors in a number of ways, including, with our thanks, in the CDSS News and on our website; and with future fundraising materials, to inspire others to give. We will not publish any information about how much you have given without your explicit consent.

Can I give anonymously?

Yes — should you wish to make your gift anonymously, we will absolutely respect your wishes. However, our hope is that you will see your gift as part of a continent-wide, once in a lifetime joyful giving event that you would not wish to be left out of! And of course, seeing your name on a list of donors can be the most powerful inspiration for others to give as well.

If I am considering making a bequest to CDSS, whom should I contact?

Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss your giving plans. You can find the basic information here.
